Egypt – Day 4: Alexandria

Alexandria Egypt

We got up bright and early to travel north to Alexandria! It’s about a 2.5 – 3 hour drive, depending on traffic.  I managed to get car sick (because I get car sick very easily) so I slept as much as I could in the back of the van.  Don’t forget your Dramamine!

Our first stop was the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa.  These catacombs were a royal cemetery when it was in use. Additionally, they were discovered to hold ancient Roman artifacts and is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages!

Admission Cost:

A ticket will run you E£80 (or roughly $2.83).

Next, we saw Pompey’s Pillar. Standing tall and proud, Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria, Egypt is a testament to the rich history and culture of this ancient city. This impressive monument, built in honor of Roman general Pompey, offers a glimpse into the past and serves as a reminder of the powerful empires that once ruled this land. A must-see for any history buff visiting Alexandria.

Perched high above the city, the Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, Egypt offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the city’s rich history. Built in the 15th century, this fortress served as a royal palace and military stronghold, and it stands as a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians. A visit to the Citadel is a must for anyone interested in the history and culture of this fascinating city.

Admission Costs:

Admission to the Citadel is E£60 (about $2.00) and that allows you to tour the inside as well as view the stunning Mediterranean Sea behind it.

It’s open daily from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM.

After the Citadel we had lunch and stopped by the Alexandria Library – a beacon of knowledge and learning for centuries – for a quick photo (we did not go inside).  It is said to have once housed over 700,000 scrolls!  Most of them have been lost due to fires over the centuries.

Then we began the 3-hour drive back to Cairo.  Tomorrow, we fly to Hurghada, located on the Red Sea!  After lots of sightseeing, we get to spend 4 nights at an all-inclusive resort just relaxing!
